Interview: 10 Questions With Black Income

Where do you think your passion for music came from?

For me it all started in my childhood, I come from a music family, my father has always played music and still does, and I grew up with Amps and speakers/guitars/drums and Hammond organs all over the house, so for me music is part of my life ever since I can remember.

So it’s kinda natural for me to play music.

Who are your biggest influences?

We have a lot of influences, going back to the 60/70’s, that said we have a certain love for the energy that came out in the 90s with bands like Nirvana, Alice in Chains and Soundgarden, but we also listen to fuzzier and Stoner vibe bands like Fu Manchu, Clutch and Tool, and going for a more desert vibe kinda bands like Queens of the stone age.

To you, what is the most important thing about playing live?

The connection between the audience and the band, when it all comes together and things go to a higher level, that's really what it’s all about… take something with you home, that great experience you get inside when your part of something.

What is the one song you had wished you had written?

We get this question a lot… and the answer is Black Hole Sun with Soundgarden, and tell you why… when listening to the track it's the perfect combination of Beatles and Black Sabbath.

What are the biggest lessons learned over the years?

Well, we got ripped off big time by our former label Mighty Music, so we learned not just to thrust everyone in this industry, that said there is a lot of helping support people out there, so you got to learn to balance the industry.

Are there any bands/artists that you recommend that don’t much attention?

There is a lot of talented artists these days, the internet has really helped to open this up…. we meet a lot of great bands, but unfortunately they tend to split up, since the amount of Noise provided by musicians releasing crappy stuff, makes it too hard for the talent to shine thru… a band we listen to a lot, that is not that big is Dinosaur Pile Up.. check it out, they are pretty cool.

If there is one thing you would like to achieve in your career, what would it be?

Living of the music would be great, it gets better year after year, but we are not all there yet, we’re not aiming to get all big and famous, but to able to concentrate 100% on the music, would be great and we’re sure the quality of the music that we make would raise to a higher standard.

What’s the one thing you hate about touring and the music industry in general?

Haha. The thing is when Touring, there is a lot of great venues doing a great job, but there are also some venues that don't get it… especially Rock Venues fail..don't know why they spend time setting up a whole schedule for getting time to soundcheck with the different bands, when they don't keep things on the schedule, and you end up as a band just sitting and waiting, to find out that there is no time left for you to do the Soundcheck, and when you go backstage, there are no food/coffee or soft drinks, only Beer and Beer and more Beer… what we don't get it if you want to get the best out of the artist as a Venue, why not give the guy’s a proper meal, so they are happy and filled with energy, ready to do a kick-ass gig for the audience.

What are your biggest interests away from music?

We love nature, the beach and coffee … so whenever we get the chance when Touring we go check out new places, and here we find a lot of inspiration.

What is the hardest thing you have had to overcome and how did you overcome it?

We change the lineup in the middle of our last tour, that was a hard one, our bass player left the band, and luckily Henrik our vocalist is quite talented on all instruments, so he played the bass on a few gigs until we found a replacement… but we still kicked ass at those gigs, and the audience got special time with a Black Income lineup never seen before.
